Central Highlands Water - McCain Water Minimisation Project
McCain Foods Australia, Ballarat’s largest water user, is saving 15 per cent of Ballarat’s potable water a year thanks to $635,474 from RDV's Infrastructure Development Fund.
The McCain Water Minimisation Project was part of a strategy by Central Highlands Water to manage the serious water deficit in this region, when water storages were less than 13 per cent full.
The project has included water recycling, replacement of old equipment and elimination of water waste in the food production process. These initiatives will boost the amount of internal water recycling and eliminate water use in certain parts of the food production process and reduce spillage within the processing areas.
Combined with previous water savings measures, this project will help reduce demand for potable water at McCain by 50 per cent. In terms of best practice, the Wendouree plant's water efficiency is now in the top 20% of 29 plants in the McCain Group worldwide, bettered only by much newer ones.
