Deakin University's Waterfront Campus

Deakin University in Geelong is adding to the city’s reputation as a vibrant, world-class community and a business and intellectual hub. The Regional Infrastructure Development Fund has assisted with projects to improve Deakin’s facilities as it continues to expand its course offerings and research capabilities.

Dennys Lascelles Woolstore Building, Waterfront Campus

Deakin’s Geelong Waterfront Campus is located on the foreshore of Corio Bay in the city’s central business district. The campus centrepiece is the historic woolstore buildings from the 1800s that have been extensively renovated to create a modern and impressive study environment for around 1,200 students a year.

In 2009, the campus was significantly expanded with the opening of the Dennys Lascelles Woolstore, following a $37 million redevelopment. RDV's Infrastructure Development Fund contributed $6 million to the project, which has enabled the landmark six-storey building to cater to 1,000 additional students.

The building houses two distinct schools.

  • The Alfred Deakin Institute, an interdisciplinary teaching and research centre offers courses in political science, public policy and governance, international relations, globalisation and journalism.
  • The Deakin Geelong Health Precinct focuses on nursing, occupational therapy and physiotherapy, all of which are fields experiencing skills shortages, particularly in regional areas.

The Dennys Lascelles building also includes a mix of retail, professional and commercial spaces, and promotes public access with walkways through to the waterfront precinct, public transport, and Geelong’s central business area.

Geelong Technology Precinct, Waurn Ponds Campus

Over 4,000 students choose to study at Deakin’s attractive Waurn Ponds Campus, which features expansive landscaped grounds, an ornamental lake and modern buildings.

The campus is home to the Geelong Technology Precinct (GTP), a hub for research and development that was established with assistance of $1.96 million from RDV's Infrastructure Development Fund. The GTP employs 170 people and focuses on Deakin’s core research capabilities in materials, biotechnology, chemistry and environmental engineering, along with regional strengths in manufacturing and agriprocessing. The GTP aims to promote partnerships and collaborative research, both between Deakin and other universities and the many technology-oriented businesses that are based within the precinct.

The GTP will be expanding through a $13 million project that will include a 3,000 square-metre Proof of Concept Centre, almost doubling the GTP’s current research, capacity. RIDF is providing $6 million towards the project, which is expected to create over 400 jobs and deliver a $48 million boost to the local economy over the next five to 10 years.
