Lamattina Farms 'Switched on horticulture'

A project to upgrade electricity infrastructure in Kaniva will be completed with the help of a $281,429 RDV Infrastructure Development Fund grant from the Regional Electrical Access Program.

The project involves upgrading 16km of existing electricity powerline to three-phase capacity. Increasing electricity capacity will allow for expanded horticultural production, converting irrigation from diesel to electricity power, power metering, switch boards and mechanisms to control irrigation pumps.

The upgrade will allow Kaniva carrot producer Rocky Lamattina and Sons to increase carrot production on its 6000 hectare farm by 30 per cent and diversify production to potatoes and other crops, creating up to 16 new jobs in the process. The infrastructure will also help the farm to operate more sustainably by reducing its use of diesel.

Providing three-phase power will also help West Wimmera Shire Council attract new industry to the region.
