Port of Echuca revitalisation - Australia's great river port experience
A $4.98 million RDV Infrastructure Development Fund grant will help revitalise the Port of Echuca creating 60 jobs during construction and 36 full time jobs after investment and increased tourism.
The $14.2 million Shire of Campaspe project will bolster the unique tourism experience of an inland river port, one of the key visitor attractions on the Murray, attracting an extra 22,000 visitors a year and boosting the region's economy by $4 million. The Commonwealth Government is also contributing $5.2 million to the project, with the balance being provided by the Shire of Campaspe.
Wharf restoration, heritage interpretation and precinct works will capitalise on the port's unique place as a regional Victoria tourist attraction. Business and investment studies confirm that significant redevelopment works can sustain and enhance this iconic tourist attraction.
The proposed project will leverage new investment and that will secure a vibrant future for the port. Investment opportunities included:
- Developing paddle steamer maintenance and restoration
- Expanding private shipwright businesses
- Expanding port precinct businesses and creating new retail spaces and
- New commercial mooring opportunities
The port - which hosts Australia's largest paddle steamer fleet - supports 3000 jobs and contributes $250 million to the local economy.
