Sovereign Hill
Visitors to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat will now experience even more of the magic of Victoria's Gold Rush following a $3 million RDV Infrastructure Development Fund grant to transform its Gold Museum and outdoor museums, and the opening of a much-awaited new interactive exhibition.
The new "Trapped" multimedia presentation capturing the 1882 Creswick Mine Disaster and the "Reinventing the Magic" tramway ride will allow visitors to experience first-hand the risks miners took every day of their working lives.
The Trapped exhibition uses new technologies to tell the story of the Creswick Mine Disaster of 1882, Australia's worst goldmine accident that trapped 27 men when the mine flooded, and after three days of rescue attempts, left only five survivors.
It is hoped this significant investment positions Sovereign Hill to draw more and more domestic visitors and more international visitors to this great part of Victoria.
The Victorian Government contributed $3 million towards the Trapped exhibition and "Reinventing the Magic" tramway ride project, $1.2 million towards the Blood on the Southern Cross exhibition with the latest investment of $3 million to the Gold Museum, bringing the government's total contribution to Sovereign Hill to $7.2 million in the past five years.
