Tarra Trail Stage 1 - Yarram to Alberton

Developing rail trails and pathways was a priority for RDV's Infrastructure Development Fund through its Provincial Pathways program. The former railway line from Yarram to Alberton will be transformed into a shared rail trail with the help of a $200,000 grant.

The Tarra Trail will eventually connect and be an important part of the Great Southern Rail Trail, adding to the significant infrastructure assets in Gippsland's nature based tourist attractions and a safe route between Yarram and Alberton.

The tourists visiting the area will be able to use the trail which will open up opportunities for new businesses and add to the region's attractions and popularity.

The Yarram project involved building a gravel trail 2.5 metres wide, with seating, signage and revegetation. A safe crossing will be built where the trail crossed the South Gippsland Highway.

Wellington Shire Council is contributing $60,000 to the $270,000 project and the local community is contributing $10,000. Future plans include a trail that will connect Foster to Yarram, via Alberton and Port Albert, creating a high value tourism attraction, beginning at Leongatha.
