Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre

With its stunning architecture and modern facilities, the new Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre is a work of art in itself.

Construction of the $8 million centre - funded with $4.5 million from RDV's Infrastructure Development Fund - involved demolition of Wangaratta's outdated, 1960s Town Hall and Playhouse Theatre buildings, making way for an iconic new venue that meets contemporary standards for performing arts facilities.

Features of the new building include:

  • a 530-seat main auditorium - the Alpine MDF Theatre
  • a flat function space - the Memorial Hall - which can seat up to 570 people
  • a function/conference room for up to 70 people
  • a new box office and main entry foyer
  • dressing rooms, a multi-purpose green room and office areas
  • a cafĂ©, commercial kitchen and theatre bar.

Opened in September 2009, the new centre was delivered in time to host Wangaratta's 50th birthday celebrations and the 20th annual Wangaratta Jazz Festival - the city's major drawcard event.

Thanks to the expanded facilities, the festival will soon be complemented by a year-round program of local, national and international performances, furthering Wangaratta's long-standing reputation as one of provincial Victoria's premier arts destinations.
