Regional Development Victoria

State Government of Victoria

Research & Policy

Over the longer term the Government and Regional Development Victoria (RDV) aim to create:

Prosperous regions - that generate value, opportunities and jobs, and contribute to the wellbeing and vitality of local communities and the Victorian economy

Sustainable regions - that strike the right balance between social, economic and environmental goals, and that manage Victoria's natural resources wisely and sustainably

Liveable regions - that offer attractive attributes, amenities and lifestyles, making them places where people want to live and where they can enjoy a good quality of life.

A prosperous, sustainable, liveable regional Victoria

RDV recognises that regions can - and should - make their own decisions and plans for highly flexible strategies and policies to match the circumstances, strengths and characteristics of regional locations, supported by government.

As a reference in the Victorian State Planning Policy Framework the Regional Strategic Planning Initiative will guide planners and decision makers about the direction of economic development and settlement patterns in regional Victoria.

The Regional Strategic Planning Initiative will deliver customised region-scale plans developed by the Victorian Government with local councils and communities.

Adapting to change

The Government is giving priority to initiatives that strengthen the capacity of regional businesses and industries to adapt to changing weather and climate patterns, and the impacts of a rapidly changing global marketplace.

The Government can provide information about local changes and trends; arrange demonstrations of new technologies and systems; support regional and local adaptation activities; assist in promoting new markets; and monitor adaptations that work well, those that do not, and why.

Actions being taken by the Government to assist regional industries and communities to adapt to new conditions include the Future Farming strategy, major water projects, agricultural research and development programs, and the establishment of the Climate Change Adaptation Research Centre.

The Government will continue to provide information and support to ensure that regional economies adapt successfully to changing circumstances and are able to offer new opportunities for businesses, investors and residents.
