Rebuilding Bowman Murmungee

The Community

The township of Murmungee is very much a farming community with three halls, a fire station and a tennis court. Lying within the boundaries of the Rural City of Wangaratta Council, Murmungee is located around 283kms from the Melbourne CBD, has a population of approximately 150 people and is bordered to the east by Indigo Shire.

The Rural City of Wangaratta's location in beautiful North East Victoria allows residents and visitors to enjoy the best that nature has to offer. Cycling, bushwalking and fishing are some of the favourite leisure activities, with the area also well known for its gourmet food and fine wines.

The Bushfires

Murmungee reported eight directly affected landholders with pasture, stock feed and fencing losses across 1927ha of public land and 175ha of private land.

Over the 2009 bushfire season the community was busy manning fire trucks and defending properties as the Murmungee area came under threat a number of times.

The Bowman-Murmungee community is resilient and familiar with dealing with natural disasters after experiencing bushfires in 2003 and 2006 prior to the 2009 bushfires.

Recovery Plan

Since the 2009 bushfires Community Recovery Committees and the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority (the Authority) worked in partnership with the community, other government departments and authorities, the philanthropic sector and private donors to deliver outcomes for the vast majority of recovery projects proposed in the 33 Community Recovery Plans across the state. The plans have been pivotal in driving and directing the community rebuilding and recovery effort, through a focus on the needs and priorities of each individual community.

With around 1,100 projects and ideas identified in plans across Victoria, the Authority estimates that around 800 of these have been addressed in varying ways. Hundreds more projects identified outside this process have been delivered across affected communities.
