Rebuilding Jindivick

The Community

Jindivick is approximately 100 kilometres east of Melbourne in West Gippsland and has a population of approximately 500 people.

Jindivick is largely a farming community with dairy farming being the predominant industry in the area. Described as 'Gourmet Deli Country', the region also boasts a growing number of boutique farms producing olives, berries and free-range meats.

While being home to the annual Hot Sauce and Fiery Foods Festival, which is the longest running chilli festival in Australia, Jindivick is also known for its world recognised Jindi Brie which is produced by Jindi Cheese, the largest Australian-owned specialty cheese manufacturer.

The Bushfires

Twenty-three properties in Jindivick were destroyed in the 2009 Victorian bushfires, while local farmland was burnt and many farms lost stock feed, fencing, sheds, machinery, water supplies and small farm bridges.

Recovery Plan

Since the 2009 bushfires Community Recovery Committees and the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority (the Authority) have worked in partnership with the community, other government departments and authorities, the philanthropic sector and private donors to deliver outcomes for the vast majority of recovery projects proposed in the 33 Community Recovery Plans across the state. The plans have been pivotal in driving and directing the community rebuilding and recovery effort, through a focus on the needs and priorities of each individual community.

With around 1,100 projects and ideas identified in plans across Victoria, the Authority estimates that around 800 of these have been addressed in varying ways. Hundreds more projects identified outside this process have been delivered across affected communities.
