Rebuilding Labertouche
The Communities
The community of Labertouche has a population of approximately 300 people and is around 100 kilometres east of Melbourne in West Gippsland. It is home to a terrific primary school, hall, badminton club, playgroup and landcare group, and has a very close community.
Dairy farming is the predominant industry in the area and Labertouche consists of mostly farmland abutting the Bunyip State Park and Bunyip State Forest to the North.
A well known landmark, Labertouche Cave, is the most visited wild cave in Victoria and is one of the State's longest caving systems. Nestled in some of Gippsland's most beautiful forest seven kilometres north-east of Labertouche, it is a unique granite boulder cave system that attracts adventure seekers from around the State.
The Bushfires
The 2009 Victorian bushfires destroyed 44 properties and a factory in Labertouche. Prime farmland was also burnt and many farms lost stock feed, fencing, sheds, machinery, water supplies and small farm bridges.
Recovery Plan
Since the 2009 bushfires Community Recovery Committees and the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority (the Authority) worked in partnership with the community, other government departments and authorities, the philanthropic sector and private donors to deliver outcomes for the vast majority of recovery projects proposed in the 33 Community Recovery Plans across the state. The plans have been pivotal in driving and directing the community rebuilding and recovery effort, through a focus on the needs and priorities of each individual community.
With around 1,100 projects and ideas identified in plans across Victoria, the Authority estimates that around 800 of these have been addressed in varying ways. Hundreds more projects identified outside this process have been delivered across affected communities.
The attachments below include the Community Recovery Plan and the response and funding status for all of the projects originally identified:
