Victoria's Pig Industry

Pork production in Victoria is an intensive industry which is mostly concentrated in the north-western regions of the state.

Over 80 per cent of Victoria's pig farms are concentrated in the Loddon, Goulburn, Wimmera and Mallee regions.

Piggery systems may be either intensive or extensive in their nature. All piggeries with more than five pigs need a permit from the local council.

In 2013-14, the gross value of the domestic pig industry in Victorian was $227.8 million. Victoria has 25 per cent of Australia’s pigs (over 500,000 pigs).

Victoria has five dedicated pig abattoirs and nine mixed species abattoirs where other species are slaughtered as well.

A major cost for Victorian piggeries is the price of grain which accounts for approximately 80 per cent of the cost of production.
