Great South Coast Plan discussed with industry

Wednesday, 13 July 2011

The Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Development Damian Drum met today with industry leaders and business and community representatives from across the region to discuss priorities outlined in the Great South Coast Regional Strategic plan.

The roundtable discussions, held in Warrnambool and Portland, focused on economic development, leadership and actions for the region.

Representing Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan, Mr Drum said the Victorian Government had a strong vision for regional Victoria and last week's launch of the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund marked the beginning of an exciting new era for rural and regional development.

"It is essential to ensure regional Victoria continues to be a key driver in the state's future growth and prosperity and the Victorian Government is committed to supporting locally identified projects," Mr Drum said.

"These roundtable events are an important opportunity to engage with local business and industry leaders, identify potential partnerships and establish working relationships.

"Communicating with local organisations is essential to ensure each area is best placed to take advantage of available government resources."

Mr Drum said the Victorian Government understood the importance of a grass-roots approach towards regional development and was committed to supporting locally identified projects.

"People living and working in the region know best what makes it tick and the government will continue to work with the local community to deliver projects that provide specific benefits to the area," Mr Drum said.
