New Horsham runway opened
Thursday, 20 October 2011
The new $1.4 million second runway facility at Horsham was opened today and will provide all-weather facilities for emergency and commercial air services.
The Horsham Aerodrome project will make a world of difference to the local community. The Aerodrome provides an important service with up to 20,000 aircraft movements each year and around 3,700 passengers coming through the facility
Emergency services including Air Ambulance, police, and the CFA are grateful for the use of Horsham Aerodrome and the addition of a second runway will improve operational efficiency and safety.
Cross winds, adverse weather conditions, erosion and dust have contributed to safety concerns with the previous runway which has held back the development of new services, including a Regular Public Transport (RPT) service.
The aerodrome upgrade includes:
- extending, strengthening and sealing the north-south runway
- a runway built at the standard endorsed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, and
- upgrading access taxiways.
The Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan said “Horsham Aerodrome is a significant service provider in the Wimmera region and the Government is pleased to support a project that will help boost economic and social growth locally, by investing in infrastructure and services.”
This improved infrastructure, made possible through support from $1.05 million in Regional Development Victoria funding, will provide an incentive for current businesses to grow and expand and also attract new investment to the region.
