More affordable homes for Wangaratta

Fr 13 May 2011

Local people, including singles, couples, small families and seniors will benefit from new affordable housing in Wangaratta, the State Government has announced.

The Minister for Housing Wendy Lovell joined residents and representatives of local support agencies to officially open the new homes in Thomas Wedge Drive today.

These new properties provide much needed affordable homes for local people.  This is quality housing and it meets high standards for design and environmental sustainability, meaning real savings for the tenants through lower utility bills.

The homes have a six-star energy efficiency rating and feature energy saving appliances, gas boosted solar hot water and a 2,100 litre water tank, plumbed to the toilets to supplement mains water.

The houses, completed in December 2010, are owned and managed by the not-for-profit housing association, Rural Housing Network Limited.

The network has substantial experience in tackling the challenges of homelessness and disadvantage in the Hume region.

The $2.8 million development received the majority of its funding through the Commonwealth Government's Nation Building Social Housing Initiative while Rural Housing Network contributed 25 per cent of the cost.

The 11 new two-bedroom homes were designed and constructed by Southern Vale Homes and each includes a single car garage, covered alfresco area and private garden, set around a common driveway.

A centrally located landscaped garden area, with a large rotunda, barbeque, lighting and seating, has also been built for residents to use and enjoy.

Rural Housing Network received $18.5 million from the Nation Building Social Housing Initiative to deliver 94 new affordable homes in the Hume region.

Rural Housing Network Limited is the largest provider of homelessness services, advocacy and housing services in the Hume region, with offices in Wodonga, Wangaratta, Shepparton, and Seymour. "Through this successful partnership with the State Government, Rural Housing Network is able to provide more housing for vulnerable people in the region.
