Community Hub for drought-affected area

Wednesday 20 January 2016

Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford today announced a grant of $495,000 for West Wimmera Shire Council to build a new community hub in Kaniva, one of the towns currently experiencing ongoing dry conditions.

The Government has fast-tracked funding from its Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund to help Victoria’s drought-affected communities.

In Kaniva, the new community hub will replace the existing structure and feature a large function room, an office, flexible meeting spaces and a commercial kitchen. The new building will be accessible for people of all abilities and the power and water supply to the adjacent parkland will be upgraded to support use into the future.

Kaniva locals identified the community hub as a priority and all community and sporting organisations that plan to use the hub will contribute both financially and in-kind to the works, which will cost a total of $815,400. The multi-functional space will also be used for large events, including the Kaniva Show.

The Government is assisting the communities most affected by the dry seasonal conditions, working closely with councils to bring forward a number of projects which will strengthen their economic and social base.
