Alstom’s Ballarat factory to build more trains for Melbourne

Tuesday, 3 March 2015

The Victorian Government today announced the purchase of 30 new X’trapolis train carriages which are to be built in Ballarat..

This is a major investment in Ballarat jobs.

Manufacturer Alstom’s production line was likely to reduce capacity in the coming year hence this commitment provides more certainty to the company and its workers.  It will also plug a critical short-term gap in train availability on Melbourne’s rail network.

The 30 train carriages announced today make up five six-car trains, the first of which is expected to come into service by the end of 2016.
