Visionary project for Central Geelong
Friday, 03 June 2011
Central Geelong is set to be revitalised with the launch of a visionary planning project which has been approved for $150,000 in funding from the Victorian Government. Minister for Regional Cities Denis Napthine announced the Government's support for the Vision II – A Future for Central Geelong initiative while addressing The Restless City Forum at Cunningham Pier this morning.
Vision II will deliver an agreed scenario that will encourage and enable a vibrant business, shopping, living, entertainment and learning precinct right in the heart of Geelong. Geelong has excellent health and education facilities right in the centre of town and this presents fantastic opportunities for the community and for the future growth of the city.
"As the second-largest city in the state, Geelong is well placed to capitalise on these facilities and the Coalition Government is proud to support a project that will deliver real benefits for the Geelong community in years to come," Dr Napthine said. Vision II emphasises engaging and consulting with a broad range of stakeholders in order to fully understand the implications and opportunities for an exciting future in the Geelong CBD".
The Government committed more than $75 million to Geelong in the recent State Budget, including $25 million to go towards the upgrade of Skilled Stadium and $15 million for the Geelong Cultural Precinct.
This project is a partnership between the Victorian Government, Deakin University, the City of Greater Geelong and the Committee for Geelong.
