National Broadband Network in the Barwon South West

The roll out of the National Broadband Network (NBN), and how it will impact the Barwon South West and Geelong in the first instance, was examined at a meeting in Geelong during the last week of November.

Former Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett, who is now Director of Explor Consulting. David is a Digital Futurist, and was the Premier of Tasmania from 2008 to 2011. He works with regional communities across Australia preparing strategies for maximising social and economic renewal using digital technology and ideas. David presented a series of unique insights into the digital fibre roll out process and how it has affected other communities around the country.

From this discussion there were a number of potential opportunities for the Barwon South West RDA to explore associated with the NBN rollout, including the barriers to success, and the impact on future service delivery for commerce and industry and essential services such as health, education and the environment. Other areas discussed included the following key themes, developing a Broadband/digital plan, talk about benefits, not technology and managing expectations of roll-out timing.

The City of Greater Geelong is taking the lead in the NBN rollout and has been proactive on this issue by forming the G21 NBN Working Group, which will initiate a digital economy strategy for the community
