Agriculture / Food in the Hume region

The Hume and Loddon Mallee RDAs funded a two staged project to investigate food opportunities in Northern Victoria. The key outcome for this project has been the development of a food strategy and supportive action plan. For the purpose of this project: Northern Victoria encompasses the local government areas of Mildura, Swan Hill, Gannawarra, Loddon, Campaspe, Moira, Greater Shepparton and Strathbogie.

Stage one involved sector mapping of the region’s key food commodity groups. The findings from this mapping are captured in the Food Opportunities in Northern Victoria (PDF 2.3 MB) report. Building on from this sector mapping stage two has involved engagement with the region’s agrifood sector in order to identify opportunities, areas of competitive advantage and factors constraining further economic growth.

The Northern Victoria Food Opportunity Strategy and Action Plan highlights the ‘burning issues’, those factors and forces likely to have the greatest impact on the performance of the agrifood sector in Northern Victoria.

The Hume RDA supported the development of a three year strategic plan for Upper, Central and Lower Hume Sub Regions to complement the development of the Northern Victoria strategy.

The Upper, Central and Lower Hume Sub Regions Food Opportunity Strategy and Action Plan 2015-2018 highlights how the three sub regions can take advantage of the predicted global growth in demand for food by building on its significant areas of competitive advantage. The sub regions points of difference include a growing, diversified agrifood economy and increasing level of production of premium foods.

This strategy and action plan outlines how the sub regions can continue to leverage these competitive advantages and points of difference.
