Hume regional leaders gather to review progress and look forward

11 September 2012

More than 200 regional leaders from business, community and government came together in Wangaratta last month for the Hume Strategy Regional Leadership Gathering.

A key focus for the gathering was to provide participants with a progress update on the Hume Strategy for Sustainable Communities 2010-2020 (Hume Strategy) regional plan, which was supported by the launch and distribution of the State of the Hume Region 2010-2012 progress report on Hume Strategy implementation.

The Hume Strategy is an important tool being used by a broad range of stakeholders to support collaborative action, increase regional competitiveness and secure future investment for the region.

The leadership gathering included presentations by experts from the environment, communities, economy, transport and land use sectors who encouraged the audience to think in a strategic way about future opportunities for the region.

Presenters, together with Adam Furphy a highly regarded local business leader, formed a panel for an interactive Q&A forum facilitated by well known journalist and television presenter, Peter Couchman.

An Expo display at the gathering highlighted cross government activity and progress on priority projects and enabled participants to hold informal discussions with senior officers from local and state government.

The event was jointly sponsored by the Hume Regional Development Australia Committee, Hume Regional Management Forum and Hume Region Local Government Network, with RDA being the major funding partner.

A number of Hume RDA Committee members participated in the event and Mark Byatt, the Hume RDA Chair, played a hosting role introducing the keynote speaker, prominent futurist Peter Ellyard.

The State of the Hume Region 2010-2012 report which describes achievements during the first two years of Hume Strategy implementation can be accessed on the web at www.rdv.vic.gov.au/victorian-regions/hume
