Advocating for improved infrastructure in Melbourne’s North

24 May 2016

Northern metro councils and La Trobe University have contributed funds to the update of NMRDA’s landmark Northern Horizons: 50 Year Infrastructure Strategy for Melbourne’s North report.

This report is a comprehensive regional analysis of all aspects of infrastructure that looks out over the next 50 years, presenting an agreed regional approach from stakeholders. It identifies the region’s need for enhanced infrastructure and improved access, particularly in relation to road infrastructure, public transport, social infrastructure (health and aged care facilities), gas and industrial zoned land. Using this analysis, the report identifies short, medium and long term priority projects for Melbourne’s North.

Since publication of the initial report in 2014, the Victorian Government’s Metropolitan Planning Authority has adopted it as a framework for infrastructure development across the region.

The government has also committed to undertake a number of its recommendations, including:

  • a rail extension to Mernda
  • a new interchange connecting O’Herns Road with the Hume Freeway in Epping, and duplication of a 1.4km section of O’Herns Road
  • duplication of 3.9 kilometres of Yan Yean Road
  • a bicycle network
  • removal of grade separations at key locations
  • Tullamarine Freeway and Sunbury Road corridor improvements.

The updated Northern Horizons report will take these changes into account, and include new issues that may have arisen since the original report was published.

The new report will be available in August 2016.
