Local Initiatives
The $200 million Local Initiatives component of the RGF funds local projects and plans, as prioritised by regional and rural communities and local councils with the assistance and support of the five non-metropolitan Victorian Regional Development Australia Committees.
Local Government Infrastructure Program
The Local Government Infrastructure Program (LGIP) component of the RGF aims to provide regional and rural councils with certainty to plan for and build new infrastructure or renew assets.
The LGIP will have the flexibility to support a range of local council initiatives including roads, bridges, new community assets such as halls and theatres, sporting grounds, grandstands, pools, libraries, and upgrading existing facilities. In order to ensure the maximum degree of certainty, each council will be allocated a notional four-year total for projects nominated from its Forward Capital Works Plan.
Through a straightforward allocation of funds direct to all regional councils, greater certainty will be provided to plan and deliver key infrastructure projects already scheduled as part of existing Local Government Forward Capital Works Plans.
Putting Locals First
The Putting Locals First Program (PLFP) has been designed to realise the Government’s policy of supporting the development of local solutions to address gaps in services and infrastructure in regional communities.
The program recognises that local people have a role to play in addressing the challenges faced by their communities. When local people become involved in the decision-making and governance roles, communities are able to identify and assess issues, explore local priorities and take action to get things done.
By building stronger communities, we also improve people’s access to jobs, education, business opportunities and other aspects of community life such as recreation and volunteering. Stronger communities also make better use of existing resources, networks and partnerships, particularly in response to change.
