Victoria's Biofuels and Bioenergy Sector

Cover of the Ernst & Young report - Fuelled for GrowthThe biofuels and bioenergy sector in Victoria is a burgeoning industry with exciting potential for growth. The Victorian Government is promoting investment in the sector to build economic resilience, improve the State's environmental profile and diversify Victoria's energy mix.

A number of studies commissioned by the Victorian Government have explored the nature of the state’s biomass resources and their potential for development and expansion. These include:

  • The CSIRO report Regional estimates of Victorian biomass resources, which consolidates and validates a series of studies conducted in each major Victorian region
  • The Victorian Department of Primary Industries’ 2011 research into the potential for bioenergy crop production on marginal and under-resourced land
  • URS’s 2010 study of biomass resources in Victoria’s timber industry.

An investor information document, Fuelled for Growth (PDF 9.5 MB) has been prepared for Regional Development Victoria that establishes the merits of Victoria as a competitive destination for investment in biofuels and bioenergy. This document will focus on:

  • the emerging market for biofuels and bioenergy in Australia
  • the key developments in biofuels and bioenergy in Victoria
  • Commonwealth Government initiatives and incentives stimulating biofuel and bioenergy investments in Australia
  • Victoria’s multifaceted regional economy actively seeking diversification and capable of supplying a range of feedstocks
  • Victoria’s robust economic growth, stability, high quality utilities and extensive infrastructure to support these investments
