Central Hume
Facts
- The Hume region comprises twelve local governments and is grouped into four sub regions with distinct geographic, environmental, economic and social characteristics.
- Central Hume includes Wangaratta Rural City, Benalla Rural City and the Alpine and Mansfield Shires.
Economic Base
- There are major manufacturing and retail centres in Wangaratta and Benalla.
- Smaller settlements are located in the surrounding Alpine high country, foothills and river valleys, which enjoy the lifestyle advantages of rural community living in an attractive natural environment.
- The high country and snowfields attracts significant tourism.
Opportunities
- The headwaters of many of Victoria's major rivers are located here and the availability of water close to its source is a major driver for high value agriculture, a softwood plantation industry and a vibrant tourism industry, based on snow sports, cycling, passive recreation, wine and fine food.
- Strengthening Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Mt Buller and Lake Mountain as four-season destinations, along with more walking and bicycle trails and water-based recreation on the Murray River, will continue to grow the nature-based tourism sector in the region.
