Upper Hume
The Hume region comprises twelve local governments and is grouped into four sub regions with distinct geographic, environmental, economic and social characteristics. Upper Hume encompases Wodonga City and the Indigo and Towong Shires.
Economic Base
- Wodonga is growing strong and provides an important focus for economic activity, higher education, cultural and recreational opportunities, as well as having strong links to Albury in New South Wales.
- Grazing accounts for more than three-quarters of agricultural land use, which is largely in Indigo and Towong
- There are a number of prominent water bodies and townships with tourism, recreational, historical and conservation values.
Opportunities
- The Hume Freeway and Melbourne-Sydney rail link through Wodonga provide a platform for freight transport and logistics industries along with passenger rail and bus transport.
Challenges
- A particular challenge is planning for the growth of Wodonga and its peri-urban hinterland, whilst managing an ageing and dispersed population in the more remote areas of the sub region.
