Bendigo Spirit Lures Megan Moody to Regional Victoria
Experienced basketball player Megan Moody is making the most of opportunities on offer in regional Victoria, joining the Bendigo Bank Spirit for the 2010-11 Women’s National Basketball League season.
Megan has played at a professional level in Spain, Italy, Turkey, Great Britain and the USA, but says she still calls Victoria home.
“More than anything I want to play basketball at a professional level where my family can watch, and I can do that in Bendigo,” she said.
The Victorian Government is a proud sponsor of Bendigo’s WNBL team, which is the only regional Victorian team in the competition. Megan became the ambassador for the Make it Happen in Provincial Victoria campaign in October this year.
“I don’t think people realise how lucky they are having world class sport on their doorstep and how much this can do for the community,” Megan said.
Megan has wanted to play for respected Spirit coach, Bernie Harrower since beginning her basketball career and earlier this year she moved to the team from the Dandenong Rangers to pursue this dream.
“The move was fate really. I met with Bernie and then got a house and a job all within a month,” she said.
“I love the community here, Bendigo is very community focused and there’s no hustle and bustle like Melbourne. I live ten minutes from the excitement of the CBD but I also have my own peace and quiet.”
When Megan is not playing basketball, she works in the financial sector in Bendigo’s CBD.
“Bendigo offers a variety of employment, opportunities for community involvement and readily available services that I don’t think you get in Melbourne,” she said.
Megan said she already feels like one of the locals.
“I settled in here really easily, the people are so friendly and helpful,” she said.
