New bank headquarters
Location: Bendigo
Funding: Regional Development Victoria's infrastructure development fund - $3 million
In a regional city famous for its historic buildings, the new Bendigo and Adelaide Bank headquarters stands out in Bendigo as a showpiece of modern architecture.
The six-storey, $100 million Bendigo Centre is the only headquarters of an Australian bank to be located outside a capital city, and one of the first '5 star Green Star' buildings to be constructed in a regional city.
The centre accommodates 1000 employees across two buildings linked by a glass-walled skywalk. Surrounding the centre is a complex of new retail stores, cafes and restaurants, public space built through funding from the Bendigo Bank and a RIDF grant provided to the City of Greater Bendigo.
The construction project was one of the largest in Bendigo's history with one hundred construction workers employed and 300 new long-term jobs were created after the building opening.
This new community meeting place includes the Lyric Square piazza and performance space (named after the Lyric Theatre that once occupied the site), two new landscaped laneways connecting Bath Lane and High Street, and a timber-decked, wharf style promenade over the Bendigo Creek.
