Reflections from the Chair, Emily Lee Ack

23/03/2018

This newsletter comes out at a time of great hardship for some of our communities.

I want to start by expressing my support, and that of the whole Partnership, to those affected by the bushfires and to thank all those who worked, and continue to work, tirelessly to protect our region. In particular, I would like to express my personal thanks to the community and volunteers of Cobden, who were a comfort to my family and I on 17 March. As always, I am awed by our amazing community.

Please find a link to information about disaster assistance provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA). The Government has also announced additional mental health support and livestock fodder for fire affected farming communities in the South West.

On a more everyday note, Great South Coast Regional Partnership members have continued working over the past few months through the findings of the Regional Assembly. We are in the process of reviewing what will form part of our work plan for 2018.

This may be an election year, but it is clear that the priorities for the region transcend politics.

The easiest way to create a spirit of bipartisanship is to be clear about our shared priorities, and the Great South Coast communities who have provided us with feedback could not have been clearer – high quality roads, expanded opportunities for the economy, great healthcare and education for our kids and a thriving arts and culture community are critical for our future. In light of the recent bushfires, the Partnership will review whether these Priorities should be adapted.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Partnership who contribute so many hours of their time as volunteers – your commitment to the community is so important.

And I would also like to thank everyone in our communities who brings their thoughtfulness, enthusiasm and passion for a great future for our region into discussions with us.

Emily Lee Ack, Chair, Great South Coast Regional Partnership
