Construction starts on Bendigo Art Gallery project

13/02/2026

One of Bendigo’s biggest projects is now underway, with construction beginning at the Bendigo Art Gallery.

It’s a major redevelopment that will elevate the gallery’s already enviable reputation as a major regional destination, support new jobs, and bring investment to the local construction sector.

After the appointment of local contractor Fairbrother Construction, the gallery has been emptied of artwork for construction to begin. The works will add a second-floor blockbuster exhibition space, learning centre, theatrette and a Traditional Owner Place of Keeping for Dja Dja Wurrung cultural materials.

With a $45 million investment, the project will provide the new facilities and spaces for even more exciting local and international exhibitions to be hosted – meaning more visitation.

As a result, the transformed gallery is expected to add an extra $35 million a year in spending and add 170 local jobs to the local economy.

During the construction period, the local community and visitors will still be able to experience an exciting series of events, activities, arts, culture and performances.

This includes in-and-around the gallery site, with a View Street Amplification Program commencing with monthly musical performances and opportunities for local traders to showcase their businesses.

Across Bendigo, major events will keep visitors coming to the city, kicking off in March with CURIOSITY: Building Breakthroughs in LEGO® Bricks, an exhibition developed in collaboration with Bendigo Art Gallery.

The redevelopment of Bendigo Art Gallery is being funded through a $21 million investment by the Victorian Government through the Community Support Fund, $9 million from the City of Greater Bendigo, $4 million from the Gallery Board and $9.35 million from philanthropic donations.
