Gallery redevelopment to start soon as contractor confirmed
24/11/2025A major project to redevelop the hugely popular Bendigo Art Gallery will soon be underway after a Head Contractor was secured for the $45 million project.
Fairbrother Construction, which has operations in East Bendigo and experience on local infrastructure projects, will lead the redevelopment. It’s a project that will see Bendigo Art Gallery take its status as a world-class cultural facility and tourism drawcard to a new level.
The appointment of a Head Contractor will now see the project move quickly towards construction, which is expected to take around 2 years. These works will create a second-floor blockbuster exhibition space, learning centre, theatrette, and Traditional Owner Place of Keeping for Dja Dja Wurrung cultural materials.
This construction phase of the project is forecast to create approximately 260 jobs, with another 170 jobs to follow once the gallery has reopened.
Up to $35 million in annual spending is expected to be added to the local economy once the redevelopment is complete.
With the Head Contractor now secured, the gallery’s incredible collection of artwork will be moved into storage ahead of its doors closing to the public at the end of the month.
While the gallery is closed, the City of Greater Bendigo will deliver a special program of exhibitions and events at other locations to keep residents and visitors connected to Bendigo’s celebrated arts and culture scene.
The redevelopment of Bendigo Art Gallery is being funded through a $21 million investment by the Victorian Government through the Community Support Fund, $9 million from the City of Greater Bendigo, $4 million from the Gallery Board and $9.35 million from philanthropic donations.
