Home is where the heart (of Gippsland) is
22/10/2025More housing is on the way across Gippsland for skilled workers and their families, with affordable homes under construction across the Latrobe Valley, East Gippsland and Bass Coast.
Health care and social assistance is one of Gippsland’s largest employing industries and we’re helping local services provide homes for their workers through our Regional Worker Accommodation Fund.
Latrobe Valley Village
Vital health and aged care workers moving to the Latrobe Valley will have more places to call home.
Works are now completed on seven new self-contained units at Latrobe Valley Village in Newborough. These upgrades are transforming an unused wing of the aged care centre for up to 14 people, expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“This new accommodation will make a real difference to our workforce and residents, providing our new team members a place to call home and supporting the personalised care and connection we provide to our residents,” said Latrobe Valley Village CEO, Alison Skeldon.
The new housing has shared living spaces and is in a residential area close to public transport - helping workers to feel right at home for years to come.
Latrobe Valley Village is a trusted retirement and aged care services organisation with a residential aged care facility and retirement village in Moe.
Bairnsdale Regional Health Service
In Bairnsdale, new modern housing is set to boost staff numbers for Bairnsdale Regional Health Service (BRHS).
As East Gippsland’s largest employer, BRHS’s offering includes children and birthing services, palliative care and emergency care across the region. The health service supports Gippslanders from the far east to the northern high country.
Works are underway to build 26 new units for more than 30 staff. This will take the heat off the region’s tight rental market and ensure more people can access the care they need, when they need it.
The new housing will place workers across the road from the hospital, providing them with safe and direct access to their workplace.
“We are so excited to finally have local access to new purpose built, contemporary and secure accommodation, which will provide us with a competitive advantage in our endeavours to attract the highest calibre care-focused workforce now and into the future,” said BRHS CEO, Peter Abraham.
Bass Coast Health – Wonthaggi Hospital
Work is underway on a new two-storey building to house doctors, nurses, allied healthcare staff and other medical specialists, who will support community members from across the Bass Coast and South Gippsland.
“This project will benefit the community by helping Bass Coast Health to attract the healthcare workers who provide a wide range of specialist medical services locally, enabling our community to have greater access to quality care closer to their homes,” said Bass Coast Health Interim CEO, Professor Simone Alexander.
The new, modern accommodation will feature communal and outdoor living areas. The accommodation will be on hospital grounds, so staff don’t have to worry about commuting to work.
Bass Coast Health has a range of hospital and community-based care services, including Wonthaggi Hospital, the Phillip Island Community Hospital and the San Remo Health Hub.
At least 20 healthcare workers can live in the new living spaces. This will free up rental properties and hotel rooms in Bass Coast, helping to make accommodation more accessible for the wider community.
Omeo District Health
In the High Country, a new five-bedroom home will provide much needed accommodation for doctors and nurses at Omeo District Health.
The house was constructed off-site by Anchor Homes in Stratford and before being transported and installed in Omeo.
Through the Regional Worker Accommodation Fund, we have also contributed to prefabricated housing projects in Hopetoun, Wangaratta and other communities. This project is yet another example of how the fund champions modern construction methods to deliver homes in remote locations.
Continuing support for worker housing
These new homes will attract essential workers to support the health and wellbeing of communities across Gippsland
Our support for Gippsland's worker housing is part of our investment of more than $47 billion into rural and regional communities in just over a decade.
