Innovative glasshouse ready to grow

04/03/2026

Bacchus Marsh is now home to an innovative glasshouse that’s growing resilient fruit and vegetable seeds for domestic and international markets, boosting local production and securing our food chain.

Rijk Zwaan Australia has developed the facility with our support, expanding the company’s regional footprint and setting it up to add 40 new full-time jobs by next year.

Rijk Zwaan’s new glasshouse, with brown vents along the roof and brown and grey office buildings to the left of the photo. Three people can be seen standing in the background, in front of the glasshouse entrance, while a tractor is visible to the right of the photo along a soil path that runs along the side of the building.

Internationally recognised for developing seeds that can withstand harsh conditions, the company has a track record of helping growers achieve strong yields and ensuring fresh fruits and vegetables reach millions of tables daily.

Rijk Zwaan’s impressive research and seed development capabilities, combined with access to global data, makes it a source of expertise and solutions-based approaches for the food industry.

This commitment to excellence is reflected in the design of Rijk Zwaan’s new glasshouse. Situated on a flood plain, the building features special panels that can move to allow floodwater to pass through – all without affecting the infrastructure or produce being grown inside.

The new facility also contains office spaces, laboratories, and warehouses, making it a one-stop-shop for seed research, development and transportation.

Our investment into the new Rijk Zwaan facility is part of our ongoing work to drive economic growth and innovation across our regions, while making them even better places to live, work, stay, experience, invest and study.
