Powering a Gippsland hub to survive storms

12/10/2026

The Mirboo North Resilience Hub has been upgraded with power, communications and refrigeration equipment to better support the community during emergencies.

It's thanks to a $200,000 special allocation from our Tiny Towns Fund, which supported installation of satellite internet connection and solar-power and battery systems at the building.

These upgrades were complimented by the installation of:

  • cold storage
  • refrigeration for emergency food and medical supplies
  • a back-up generator.

This means that critical services and communications can be delivered despite severe weather events.

In 2024, a major storm hit Mirboo North and surrounding areas, causing extensive damage.

Power outages were widespread and long-lasting, prompting the need for infrastructure that could provide support to the area during times of emergency.

The Mirboo North Resilience Hub was developed in partnership with the Mirboo North & District Community Foundation to improve the community's preparedness and resilience for future emergencies.

With the upgrades completed, the community now has access to an off-grid power supply to support residents, local businesses, essential services and community organisations.

Beyond the serious physical destruction, natural disasters can have long-lasting impacts on a region’s industries and businesses. This project will make the local economy around Mirboo North more resilient to future storms, floods and fires.

More than 500 Tiny Towns Fund projects are now being funded across regional Victoria, delivering the projects that locals want – including community upgrades, playgrounds, barbecue shelters and tourism attractions.
