The Geelong region’s premier athletics venue is getting a boost, with works set to begin on a game-changing pavilion redevelopment.

The new two-storey pavilion at John Landy Athletics Field is being supported by $5 million through the Victorian Government’s Council Support Package, with a matched $5 million investment from the City of Greater Geelong.

The pavilion will replace the outdated 1979 facility and will house a competition office, athlete change rooms, a canteen and kiosk, as well as multi-purpose rooms for regional athletes, local schools and community groups.

Once complete, the venue will provide a base for Geelong Little Athletics, Geelong Athletics and Barwon Sports Academy, allowing the organisations to better support their aspiring athletes with modern facilities and bigger spaces.

As a new attraction for the region, the venue will encourage more people to get involved in sport, attract more regional athletics events to Geelong and encourage greater collaboration between clubs.

Set for completion late next year, the pavilion will also be available for private hire for events, special workshops, training days, clinics and sport-related medical services.

It will bring the trackside facilities up to speed with the new World Athletics Class 2 accredited surface, which was completed in December thanks to a $1.5 million investment from The City of Greater Geelong.

The new pavilion is being supported by the Council Support Package which helps local governments drive visitation to rural and regional Victoria and create better public spaces that empower communities.

This investment is complemented by 3 projects supported by the Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program in the Geelong region, including the Armstrong Creek Sports Centre, the Waurn Ponds Sports Complex and new hockey facilities at Stead Park.
