Wonthaggi worker accommodation nears completion
31/08/2026New accommodation for health workers is nearing completion in Wonthaggi.
This marks an important step towards building a strong and stable regional health workforce, while helping more people get the care they need, closer to home.
External works on Bayside Health’s new two-storey development next to its residential aged-care facility are now complete.
The rooms are now being fitted out ahead of the facility opening later this year. The modern accommodation will provide 20 self-contained rooms for doctors, nurses, visiting specialists and allied health staff.
It will also feature shared indoor and outdoor spaces to provide a supportive, convenient and social environment for staff.
For people across Bass Coast and South Gippsland, the new worker accommodation will help expand the care and services available to them at Wonthaggi Hospital.
This will help reduce the need for patients to travel long distances and ease pressure on the local rental market by reducing the need to accommodate health staff.
‘This facility is a gamechanger for our ability to attract clinical professionals to our region,’ said Bayside Health Regional Care Group CEO, Louise Sparkes.
‘It will help us increase the level of quality care our community can access locally and, in many cases, save them from travelling for treatment.’
The project is supported through our Regional Worker Accommodation Fund, which has activated more than $300 million in private investment to build accommodation that supports communities, key regional employers, industries and thousands of workers.
These investments would not have occurred in these rural and regional locations without support from this program.
This fund is part of our ongoing work to make rural and regional Victorian towns even better places to live, work, stay, experience, invest and study.
