Regional Development Victoria

Portland Economic Diversification

We’re working in Portland in Victoria’s south west to create economic opportunities and strengthen financial resilience.

Portland and the wider Glenelg Shire have limited types of industries, so we're working with local government, businesses, industries, and the community to improve economic opportunities in the region.

The $17.4 million Portland Economic Diversification Plan helps support projects that will grow and strengthen the local economy. The projects will focus on:

  • Making the Portland and Glenelg Shire economy more resilient.
  • Removing barriers to economic growth.
  • Creating more job opportunities.
  • Boosting business confidence for investing in the area.
  • Supporting long-term economic growth through key projects and community-led solutions.

Bunnings creating new jobs in Portland

A $2.5 million investment through the Portland Economic Diversification Plan has activated the Portland North Employment Precinct, supporting the city’s development as a major economic centre for southwest Victoria.

Our investment in enabling infrastructure at the Portland North Employment Precinct led to Bunnings Warehouse opening its $18 million facility in 2025, supporting more than 50 new retail jobs in Portland.

The Portland North Employment Precinct is expected to attract investments from other major companies and businesses to drive even more sustainable jobs and growth.
