The Future Workforce: Melbourne’s North

The Future Workforce: Melbourne’s North is a comprehensive report providing an evidence-based understanding of the region’s future workforce needs over the next 10 years. It identifies strategies to develop the skills of the local workforce to meet future business and industry demand and includes an action plan involving industry, the three levels of government, and education and training stakeholders.

The region’s assets include major road, rail, freight and public transport infrastructure, a range of strategic assets such as Melbourne Airport, major new developments and a diverse workforce with an increasing level of skills and qualifications.

The Northern Melbourne Regional Development Australia (NMRDA) committee builds partnerships between all levels of government, local businesses, community groups and key regional stakeholders to provide strategic and targeted responses to economic, environmental and social issues affecting Melbourne’s North.

Northern Melbourne covers the local government areas of Banyule, Darebin, Hume, Moreland, Nillumbik, Whittlesea and Yarra.

National Stronger Regions Fund (NSRF) Round 3

Round 3 of the NSRF closed on 15 March 2016.

Announcement of successful applications is expected later in 2016.

Not-for-profit organisations and local governments can apply for grants of between $20,000 and $10 million for capital projects involving construction of new infrastructure, or upgrade or extension of existing infrastructure. Funding must be matched, in cash, on at least a dollar for dollar basis.

Melbourne’s North was successful in Round 1 of the NSRF, with the Australian Government making significant contributions to 2 major regional projects:

  • construction of Craigieburn Water Park, including an athletics track and pavilion ($9million)
  • restoration of the Sacred Heart Building at Abbotsford Convent ($2.7million).
