Ballarat builder sees window of opportunity

17/04/2023

Victoria is making more energy-efficient building materials, thanks to a new window manufacturing hub in Ballarat backed by the Victorian Government.

At Victorian builder JG King’s new $6.5 million factory it will produce more energy efficient windows, creating 15 new jobs thanks to support from the Regional Jobs Fund.

Founded by John King, JG King has built more than 24,000 homes around Victoria over the past 35 years. Known for building steel frame homes the company manufactures its own steel, windows, and doors at two manufacturing facilities in Ballarat.

With support from the Regional Jobs Fund, JG King is consolidating its two sites into one where it will install cutting edge Italian machinery, fast tracking the production of highly efficient uPVC window.

The equipment is the first and only of its kind in Australia, featuring perfect welding technology that will allow for large double and even triple glazed windows.

The investment comes as the energy efficiency standard for new homes rises from 6 to 7 stars this year under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme. The new standard ensures homes are more comfortable to live in, cost less to heat and cool, and are more resilient to extreme weather.

The new production line will see JG King become a leading manufacturer of energy-efficient windows in Australia and help other building companies achieve the new national energy efficient standard. By 2024 the facility is predicted to produce enough windows for 2500 homes each year.

The Regional Jobs Fund is part of the Victorian Government’s flagship Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund and helps businesses create jobs in regional Victoria, supports community projects and backs councils to build the infrastructure that locals and visitors need.

Across the state, the Fund has invested more than $700 million since 2015 – supporting around 13,000 jobs and delivering 1,000 projects. It’s part of the Government’s record investment of more than $36 billion in rural and regional Victoria since 2015.
