Expanding food relief for families in Baw Baw Shire

Families and community members in need across Baw Baw Shire, will have increased access to emergency food relief thanks to a project led by the Baw Baw Combined Churches Food Relief program.

Assisted by funding provided through the Victorian Government’s Pick My Project initiative, the program can now expand its operations for the growing number of members in the community seeking assistance and support.

Based in Warragul and featuring over 80 volunteers, the Baw Baw Combined Churches Food Relief program provides emergency food relief and counselling services from their site which operates like a supermarket, allowing those in needs to purchase items they need.

The funding will enable the program to service the increasing number of families who rely on this valuable project, by expanding the available space to provide greater room for food storage, through the refurbishment of the adjacent factory unit and the purchase of a new commercial fridge.

In 2018 the program helped over 840 families struggling with the cost of living and that figure is expected to grow to almost 1,000 families seeking assistance by the end of 2019.

The funding boost will not only increase the communities’ immediate access to emergency food relief, but also ensures the program continues for the long term, by providing improved amenities for the volunteers who give up their time to support those in need.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing, who visited the volunteers working in the program, said; “The project is a wonderful initiative to assist people who are facing hardship in the community, and the Government is proud to support their work through the Pick My Project initiative.”

Pick My Project is a participatory budgeting initiative from the Victorian Government, with the public encouraged to vote on projects they would like introduced in their community.
