Portland foreshore ready to welcome visitors

07/10/2022

Locals and visitors to Portland can now enjoy the seaside town’s stunning harbour views, with more accessible and safer pathways complete thanks to support from the Victorian Government.

The Portland Foreshore Redevelopment Connecting Pathways project is now complete and open to the public, which is funded with $3 million through the Building Works package.

The project connects the south end of Henty beach to the town jetty and Maritime Discovery Centre with pathways from the Youth Activity Space to Nun’s Beach. Over-water boardwalks at the discovery centre and jetty create a whole new experience for users of all abilities visiting the foreshore area.

The new pathways are part of the Government’s investment in the transformation of Portland’s foreshore to make it an even better place to live, work and visit.

Other projects backed by the Government include a new 178-metre-long town jetty and bay marina that opened last summer, along with an upgrade to the Portland Trawler Wharf to increase commercial fishing vessels capacity.

The Government has invested a total of $9.8 million in the projects, supported through the Building Works package and the Regional Infrastructure Fund. The projects were brought to life following the development of the Portland Foreshore Masterplan – a long term vision to make the seaside village town an even better tourism destination.

The Government is also supporting development of the Portland Foreshore Multipurpose Community Pavilion, also recommended within the masterplan. Community consultation on the pavilion’s design is now underway.

Once complete, the multistorey facility will have ocean-facing balconies, hospitality and retail spaces and is expected to generate an extra $18.8 million for the region’s economy, supporting 75 jobs during construction.

The Regional Infrastructure Fund is part of the Victorian Government’s flagship $30 million Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund, for projects designed to create new jobs, attract business investment and deliver infrastructure projects that will help Victoria’s regions continue to thrive.

The $2.7 billion Building Works Package is designed to provide immediate benefit to communities across the state, with more than half the projects in rural and regional Victoria.

This support is part of the Victorian Government’s record investment of more than $36 billion in regional and rural Victoria since 2015. Find out more at about the Building Works package.
