Outdoor learning space coming to Woodend Kindergarten

11/12/2019

Woodend Kindergarten will be transformed with construction beginning on a nature-based outdoor learning space to be utilised by children and the entire community.

The project, funded through the Victorian Government’s Pick My Project initiative, follows the release of a Landscape Masterplan commissioned by the Woodend Kindergarten Committee in partnership with Macedon Ranges Shire Council and consultation from the local community.

The Masterplan identified key projects to add more functional space to the kindergarten while providing further opportunities for inclusive nature-based play to better reflect the aspirations of the entire Woodend Community.

Highlights of the project include a nature-based play space and sensory garden, along with a family meeting space, with all features to be utilised by children during classes and the wider community on weekends and out-of-kindergarten hours.

Additional works by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council will upgrade the kindergarten’s underground drainage system to help prevent flooding, another key recommendation from the Landscape Masterplan.

Development of the nature-based outdoor learning space will help create an environment that supports and promotes inclusion, participation and a sense of belonging for children of all abilities.

It will also help promote engagement between families in the area, with the kindergarten becoming an even better meeting place for the Woodend Community.

Additional Government funding for the project was supplied through the Children’s Facilities Capital Program.

The Macedon Ranges Shire Council will oversee construction alongside the Woodend Kindergarten Committee, with works to be carried out by Natureform.

Construction on the nature-based learning and play space is expected to be completed in April 2020.

Pick My Project is a participatory budgeting initiative from the Victorian Government, with the public encouraged to vote on projects they would like introduced in their community.
