Morwell Innovation Centre opens doors to Alinta Energy14/01/2021
Innovation is a difficult thing to define at the best of times so a centre dedicated to innovation that promises to achieve economic outcomes might be difficult to conceive.
However, news that Alinta Energy has chosen Morwell Innovation Centre in Gippsland as the new home for their onshore customer operations hub is tangible evidence that Morwell Innovation Centre is already working to attract new opportunities for the region.
The $17 million Innovation Centre, which has been wholly funded by the Victorian Government through the Latrobe Valley Economic Development Program, will bring together and invigorate three of Gippsland’s key growth sectors – health, food and fibre and new energy – to redefine the region as a business innovator.
The new Innovation Centre will be managed by Federation University and home to incubator and accelerator programs and creative co-working spaces that will promote innovative design thinking and skills development, with direct links to local industry and community.
The announcement that Alinta Energy will bring its customer operations hub onshore hiring hundreds of Victorians in the Latrobe Valley underscores the strong collaboration between education, business and industry needed to support economic growth and is a sign the Innovation Centre is already delivering for the region.
By establishing its operations within the Innovation Centre, there will be opportunities for Alinta Energy and precinct stakeholders to collaborate on innovative projects in the energy sector and contribute to new energy transition projects.
Located on the corner of Monash Way and Princes Drive in Morwell, the Innovation Centre will also be tenanted by other private sector organisations who will have direct access to on-site partners within the Hi-Tech Precinct including TAFE Gippsland, Gippsland Tech School, Federation University and Latrobe City Council.
The Centre will also integrate with the Gippsland Tech School to link students directly with local industry and skills and prepare Gippsland for jobs of the future and innovative ways of working.
