Budget 2020/21 delivers for the Great South Coast

The Victorian Government’s 2020/21 Budget is investing in initiatives that support recovery in the Great South Coast region, including $384 million to redevelop the Warrnambool Base Hospital - delivering a new emergency department, operating theatre and beds.

This year’s Budget is focused on driving the economic and social recovery of Victoria, including enabling strong recovery across rural and regional Victoria.

Other investments in the Great South Coast region include $272.4 million to upgrade the Great Ocean Road and its inland routes, as well as key roads which support the dairy industry in the South West Region.

This includes $115 million to upgrade the inland routes between the Great Ocean Road and the Princes Highway West, which are vital connections for the tourism and freight industries as well as local communities.

A further $17.4 million will be directed to priority roads which support the Barwon South West Dairy Supply Chain – including rebuilding, resurfacing and widening roads, strengthening or replacing bridges and planning for future upgrades.

Warrnambool will receive a further $260 million in funding for the Warrnambool Rail Line Upgrade Stage 2 to allow modern VLocity trains to run to and from Warrnambool for the first time. More social and affordable housing will also be built in Warrnambool using $25 million from the $1.25 billion Big Housing Build.

Warrnambool will also benefit from the $21.4 million statewide expansion of the Hospital Outreach Post-Suicidal Engagement (HOPE) service, which provides individual, intensive and one-on-one support for Victorians as they rebuild their lives.

Another $5.9 million will be used to develop opportunities to diversify Portland’s local economy and increase jobs and economic growth in the area.

The South West will receive $682 million to develop Victoria's Renewable Energy Zones, bolstering system strength and unlocking new renewable energy investment that will support economic growth and jobs.

This year’s Budget also includes a number of state-wide initiatives focused on boosting key regional industries, creating jobs and encouraging regional tourism.

These initiatives include the $465 million Victorian Tourism Recovery Package, the $626 million Victoria's Digital Future Now initiative and the $10 million Coronavirus (COVID-19) Regional Recovery Fund.
